17, 18, 21 who gives a damn? She wasn't a child. America has pathetic age of consent laws. Can't stand Gaetz but this is feeble.

@twinValleySpirit Why?

@FortitudineVincimus Not if the law is arbitrary and unjust. In some countries the law is 12. Do you think THAT is reasonable?

@Jacaerys1 And you're an intellectual child.

@pvw732 EVERYBODY breaks laws they don't agree with. Age of consent laws are simply a way to provide a compromise that protects minors from exploitation - a very laudible goal BTW. I know of plenty of grown adults who are exploited by their partners, and plenty of teens with the maturity to make a wise decision. When laws are not about what's right, but what's easy for lawmakers, damn right we have a duty to evaluate them on a case by case basis.

@FortitudineVincimus My point being, the mere fact that something is a law does not make it morally or socially right - or do you believe that America's laws are perfect? Laws are culturally and temporally created. They are not depictors of some objectively flawless assessment. America's laws are PARTICULARLY flawed because they are created against the stifling morality of the deeply flawed Biblical world view. In America you can give your life "for your country" (for the wealth of those that profit from the industrial military complex) 3 years before you can drink alcohol, and in many states, marijuana is still illegal. Most countries recognise that setting an age of consent looong after you are sexually active is a bad idea.

@madeyemads Okay, but that's you. Another 4 years will change your persepective still further. So why choose that arbitrary line? And other 17 year olds could be more mature than people in their 40s. America infantilises its youth (when it's convenient) and as a result, they act like infants. The country is fine for you to die in wars, sign yourselves up to 30 year college debt contracts, and get a job, but you can't drink or have sex. It's pathetic. In fact, I've never known a more immature, selfish nationality.

@FortitudineVincimus Of course you can and I'm positive that you do so every single day. Do you obey the speed limiit all the time, pay your taxes on time, never steal, never got in a fight? And that's just the laws you know about. Thomas Jefferson, one of America's founders said "If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so."

@pvw732 If a law is immoral or pointless, the distinction between civil or criminal is irrelevant. It's a crime to kill a police officer but if George Floyd had killed all three of the police before they murdered him, I would consider it reasonable. As for speeding tickets - classic example. If you are outside a school in a 20 and do 30, I think you deserve a ticket. If you are on an empty desert highway and do 200 when you are alone in your car, I do not. Everything is situational. But yes, if they are a danger, OF COURSE congress people should receive and pay their tickets too.
