Every extra gallon of fuel costs MORE fuel to carry. The problem is American gluttony, not airlines that are endeavouring not to crash because of it.

@yeetghostrat Ah yes, I see your point, but capitalism always wins over lives. I don't think weight makes any difference to impact strength at that scale though.

@yeetghostrat 100% agree. Perhaps they're building up a database to see how much their average needs to be adjusted?

@yeetghostrat THe last thing any airline wants is to discourage customers from using its services, but if American gluttony is so severe that it affects safety, that needs addressing. If people feel ashamed for revealing their over-eating at the check in, maybe rather than blaming the world for treating them like the livestock they've become, do something about the weight. When it comes to the fee fees of an overeater or my likelihood to land in one piece (or even the cost of my ticket), your feelings lose every time, and not by a small margin.

@piccalillipit9211 You're right. The vast majority of a space rocket's fuel is expended simply to get the fuel into space.

@mrike5651 Indeed.

Planes have a set capacity. It's not like they're putting extra people sitting in the aisles.

@yeetghostrat It makes absolute sense to me. In an industry where weight = cost, they should start charging fat people more, especially, as you say, nobody wants to sit next to a sweating bulging mass of flesh that takes up half of your seat. But even if they don't, they need to trim small planes by balancing out the weight. TBH, flyers get treated so badly by airlines, I wouldn't fly unless it was an absolute necessity

@yeetghostrat Perhaps they will eventually introduce discreet scales. Personally, I have zero compasion for gluttonous, lazy people who are sensitive about their weight.
