The population density could be lower, the old could be more cautious, Latinos could be more resistant - without knowing the detailed picture it's hard to say for certain. But almost 33,000 Floridians are dead. That seems like a failure any way you slice it.

@bryana8383 New York has many times the population density, a higher working population, and a metro - hardly a like-with-like comparison.

@bryana8383 "failure" is a consderably worse death rate than the rest of the 1st world who took action. Britain was an abject failure, but at least has been a soaring success in its vaccination and treatment programs for instance.

@bryana8383 Of course you can compare countries to states. Florida is an autonomous area that decides its own covid policy. It has a population of 21 million people, and 32,000 deaths. That's an APPALLING death rate. The fact that other places are also appalling because you had a despicable president the past 4 years does nothing to elevate it. Florida is an absolute failure. OF COURSE you can blame deaths per capita on density - it's one of the most important metrics in attempting to compare like with like. But even if New York is an appalling disaster, so what? The whole of America is a disaster thanks to Trump and idiots like DeSantis. Pointing at somewhere else bad doesn't make you NOT bad.

@bryana8383 If I lined up all the kids in your child's school - let's say 1500 students, and I said "Due to my incompetence, 2 of these kids are going to be dead by the end of the week" would you be satisfied with that? Buuut, I will just make one massive concession - I just looked up Covid death rates by state, and Florida is way down the list. I VERY much doubt that it's due to DeSantis' brilliant strategy, but the actual reasons are far more complex as I suggested all along. To quote one expert "I think it’s reasonable to say that the warmer weather certainly plays a part in Florida’s relative success," said Brooke Nichols, an infectious-disease mathematical modeler at the Boston University School of Public Health. "It’s no longer incredibly hot, necessitating indoor gathering for air conditioning, but not too cold that people need to congregate indoors for heat."

@bryana8383 It's not deaths that represent failure; it's needless EXTRA deaths. Yes, there will always be deaths. My maths is perfectly fine thanks. I used kids because most people have a particular compassion for kids and a school was an easy body to draw a comparison. I could just as easily have used a Nascar stadium as that is probably more your level. Would you go visit a nascar event at the Indy Speedway if you knew that 395 members of the audience would die? That's the same percentage you're using. This is why statistics need interpreting. Raw numbers often do not reveal the full picture, but they need normalising for other factors. The unquestionable fact is that Trump's covid policy was appalling. He denied that anyone would die, he stole masks from the states that had the sense to order them, he was partisan in his action, he refused to instigate a national policy, he attacked his own experts, he put forwards ridiculous theories about alternate solutions, then when over 100k Americans had died, he said only his fast action had prevented it being a million, then when it was half a million, he tried to claim responsibility for the arrival of vaccines that the rest of the world helped develop. If I was you, I really wouldn't be accusing other PEOPLE of being dumb when you are clearly in total denial of reality. And on that note, we're done. You are unable to process facts like an adult. It's pointless wasting any more time on you.
