  1. The arctic is dismal place to live, but there's no reason why any other nation should get control who gets to stake claims there. Control of the mineral wealth there could enable Russia to threaten the US as a superpower with more than just nukes, but the US has needed to pull its neck in for decades. Not a good sign, but frankly anything that rattles the US makes me happy.
