  2. There was a time when Wikileaks was apolitical - they would hold ANY government to account. Then the timing and intent of their email releases made it clear that they were now actors with a particular political allegiance, and were no longer interested in merely reporting the truth - they wanted to affect outcomes. I ALWAYS had suspicions about their motivations, but that was the nail in the coffin.

  3. Diplomatic immunity is a nicety, not a place for law breakers to hide. When our police woman was sniped from the Libyan embassy, we should have taken the place by force immediately, or demanded they give up the killers. As for your comments about holding the rich and powerful accountable, I completely get where you are coming from. That's the dichotomy though. There's no way that Assange is qualified or knows enough background info to know what info is safe to release, but on the other hand, the government does indeed need to be held accountable. Vigilantes make great theatre, but in real life it's a lot more complicated, and as soon as he started releasing Clinton's emails, the illusion that he was a good actor was shattered. He was just another person trying to influence the system. Arguably, he is greatly responsible for the election of the worst despot in the past 100 years of American history.

  4. Actually, I've objected to Assange from the very start. It's NEVER for an ordinary citizen to make decisions about matters affecting global security, and regarding issues about which he is almost certainly not in possession of the full picture. But when his actions became partisan, I thought he should be taken from the embassy by force. I hope he is executed for treason.

  5. Julian Assange is Australian and is not a citizen of the UK, but I wasn't serious about him being executed - I was being (slightly) hyperbolic to suggest how betrayal like his deserves to be treated.

  6. If the fact that he was a good actor was an illusion, and he was in fact betraying the UK or its allies, then yes, absolutely.
