If he had a reasonable expectation that they were going to harm him, given that the police are useless until AFTER a crime has been committed, I totally think he has the right to take pre-emptive action. It's unreasonable that he should live in terror, or have to flee his home. Of course, the problem is proving that he didn't just invent an altercation to murder them.
