  1. It's odd that we're debating this because we both seem to be on different parts of what is essentially the same side of the fence. But yes, your final statement is what I am referring to - what wikipedia calls "causal determinism". There have been compelling results to suggest that the physical brain functions as you have decribed. It would hardly be a surprise, gven that our brains are northing more than programs running programs written by our life experience.

Even if he could be rehabilitated, he could never be trusted on the streets again Why should the US taxpayer spend millions of dollars keeping this man alive, when you have sick people dying for care costing a fracton as much? Execute him. Unless you believe in determinism, in which case no-one is truly guilty of anything.

  3. Please justify your statement that he was more than likely sexually assaulted himself. What are you talking about with the private health care system? Even if he went to a state of the art mental treatment facility, you could NEVER be certain that he cured. You can see that he's a sociopath. Even as he's being sentenced, he's making excuses. Your disbelief in determinism is at odds to your comments about him having being assaulted, and what have the girls got to do with his determinism?

  4. No Tim, you're misrepresenting determinism. Or at least limiting it to your chosen definition. As I mean it, determinism suggests that every thing is an inevitable and unavoidable consequence of the events that preceded it. In a sense it's a biological/physics proof of what you call "measurable probabilities". Everyone is programmed by previous events, and given that decision making is entirely arrived at on an unconscious level, no choice is truly yours to make.
