There's no definition of athlete in which a gamer (except on the wii) is an athlete or a sportsman. Being tactical and strategising has NOTHING to do with athleticism, or all politicians are also athletes. This is just couch potatoes wanting to get cool points and be viewed in the same way as jocks.

I didn't say that athletes WERE cool, but there's a social bias in favour of athletes. How often in the school movies is the brainiac the one walking with a girl on each arm? But you're right, I AM really cool. Thanks for noticing! ;-)

I would estimate that such examples represent about .0001% of all the societies that have ever existed. Women are physically weaker, less robust, and have lower stamina. All of these are important attributes in societies where physicality is important. Which is not to say that women can't take on physical roles, it's just that it makes sense for the ones providing the milk to be the ones doing the child-rearing and homemaking.

"Mental athlete" is just a silly name made up to make nerds sound cool.

The ability to play basketball well demands superb fitness, and for that reason alone, it already scores over being a gamer. There very few rational communities where being fit, strong, and healthy, are not viewed as beneficial, and similarly, where spending hours sitting playing games is not viewed with disdain. That disdain is not entirely irrational, and certainly not all about prejudice.

you're right, there is a massive bias to wards superficiality, but in the past it was with good reason. The strongest, healthiest malew was the best provider, and the strongest healthiest female bore the most children. There were and still are excellent biological reasons to value health and physical capability oin a mate. But I'm glad the we now live in an age where intellect is valued. It means I win on both fronts! By the way, keep your weight even when you ollie!

I just went and googled it and took my definition from the aggregate of dictionaries, which talked about the physical component. If you're referring to motor racing, that requires stamina, strength, courage, co-ordination and skill.

I didn't ignore them; they weren't relevant. I'm not going to consider the dozens of other non-sports. Clearly you're a computer gamer who wants to be viewed as an athlete because of it. Now THAT'S retarded. There's nothing wrong with playing compter games, but they don't fit any meaningful definition of sport and gamers fit no meaningful definiition of athletes. It's not a matter of conditioning. It's a matter of the words actually meaning something that computer gaming is not.
