@phoenixjz4782 Technically the British did come up with the idea of centerline first; but set it aside after the issues of potentially losing multiple turrets to one hit, and the as yet not fully enclosed sighting hoods being vunerable to gun blast, became apparent. The British also kind of beat the S-Carolina's to it, constructing two Battleships for Brazil that had fore & aft superfiring turrets. (albeit with twin wing turrets too, for a total of six) Had Congress not throttled the USN's efforts with artificial tonnage & budget limitations though, the rather cherry tree'd S-Carolina's might have been completed sooner, and been more useful.
