Takao was also the largest IJN warship to be assailed by Royal Navy X Craft minisubs' whilst in port, which didn't do her prospects of ever returning to sea any good. Maya has the unusual distinction of being the only real life IJN ship to be mentioned by name* in a Studio Ghibli film, and one of only a few shown in one too. *As the ship the protagonists father is serving on.

Coincidentally the reason I was intrieged by this class from the first time I heard of Takao, was how large and heavily armed they were.

@VersusARCH Indeed. It's never confirmed in-story whether their father was among the surrvivors of Maya's sinking, but one can only imagine the anguish he'd face upon returning home if he had.
