In a way Brewing aided the fight against Typhoid & water based illnesses; as the brewing process killed the bugs in the water. Even before germ theory had been accepted, the link behind brewed drinks & better health was known.

Especially if adding in the other chaps whom had a concomitant role in developing what we'd now call the Diesel Engine. (a bit like many other innovations; Von Diesel wasn't the only person working on one)

@gregorymalchuk272 There's also the factor that wood - even in charcoal form - wasn't thermally potent enough to meet the fuel requirements of the period. Even though fuel wood was a long pre-existing industry; it just wasn't enough. Coal was dirtier, but plentiful & much more cost effective.

@GraemePayne1967Marine Bit of an amusing coincidence that we posted comments on the same point within the same minute XD. Nicely put BTW. Certainly is easy to overlook how hazardous water used to be, as it's societally quite unusual today to consume it directly from a natural water source or a dug well. (though having directly tasted welsh stream water once, the difference from the flourided [and much harder] tap water ehere I usually live, was considerable)
