The Battle of Sidi Berrani - and Operation Compass which it was a part of - was however rightly summed up by Anthony Eden as "Never in the field of human conflict, was so much surrendered, by so many, to so few." The catastrophic scale of the italian's defeat, is the main reason they're looked back at dismissively, because the scale of the defeat to an opposing force less than 1/3rd the size remains historically unusual, and suggestive of inadequacy, instead of the British having simply been better led, better equipped and having a better strategy.

A typo on my part, duly amended.

@thecommentaryking True, but Operation Compass remains the largest operational victory (in pure mathematical terms) in British Army history. Not the only instance of many surrendering to the few (the battle of france being the best known), but a notable one.

A coincidental fact about the British vs Italy aspect of WWII, is that the formal name of the Kingdom of Italy's navy, "Regia Marina"... can be roughly translated as "Royal Navy". (though 'Royal Marine' is the literal translation, that has its own meaning in British military parlance) In that aspect; WWII is one of few instances that two navies with a [essentially] similar name fought one another.
