Then it'd be even worse off today, like many of its ex-soviet bloc neighbours. The only reason the USSR didn't gobble up Greece or Iran after WWII, was because of the UK & US intervening and the Kremlin thinking "errm... let's not push our luck".

Moral of the story... never trust Germans baring gifts... there will always be strings attached.

@alextheo9766 Agreed. This Brit' certainly understands that government policy is the general source of economic woes, rather than the actions of the man in the street. It's governments & banks after all which typically facilitate unsustainable levels of personal & public debt, encourage the populace to partake therein (often with disinformation), and then blame the populace or each other when it inevitably goes wrong. My country's obcession with facilitating personal credit since the '60's certainly hasn't done much long term good, compared to the prior practice of Delayed Self Gratification.

Be it for one reason or another, Greece walked - if not bounded enthusiastically - right into its present mess, where they're basically owned by Pax-Germanica. "Whomever controls the Currency, controls the Country." - John Meynard Keynes. "A Currency isn't a symbol of independence like a Flag or an Anthem... it's a Fact of independence, like a Border, or a Legal System, or an Army. If you don't control your own currency, and your own economic policy... you have no independence." - Christopher Hitchens. 2005 The WWII generation would be shaking their heads in disbelief.

@georgewilson7432 "Just nuke us, please" Weirdly enough Galtieri feared exactly that kind of irradiating gift of instant night time sunshine from the RAF during 1982 XD. The RAF did have several WE.117A's to hand in the theater though... so technically it was doable. That... and the RN had no shortage of Polaris... but that was mostly up north, keeping M.A.D. in effect.

@arthurshelby9464 You do realize how cliched that response is, albeit polite, which is appreciated. Communist regimes always devolve into psuedo-feudal dictatorships, with an unofficial three-tier social order and no rights whatsoever, because the concept of communism doesn't work / is a gigantic pyramid scam orchestrated by those at the top of the "movement". George Orwell and Robert A. Heinlein summed up the details of why better than I can with an OSK though.

@arthurshelby9464 What I stated was a statement of demonstrable truth. It's often stated, but still true. I think it would be more fitting to state that the theoretical end goal of communism has never been [nor ever will be] reached, but there have been plenty of costly failed attempts.

^ Delusion XD.

^ Not familiar with the underlying proverb I see. Greece was tempted into the EU by the prospect of handouts (rather like the former Warsaw Pact countries), and instead is being asset stripped. The only ones benefitting from "EU Bailouts", are the germans. Having plenty of states in debt to them suits them fine, but only as long as said countries don't default (like Iceland), or dump the euro and leave (as many in France, Italy, Hungary, Poland & elsewhere are all for) The germans have once again ignored the lessons of Otto Von Bismarck, and sooner or later will come a'cropper of it.
