  1. ^ I smell sophistry... and overstating of the USSR's capabilities. (though the UK & USA also heavily over-estimated the Russians during this period, as much as the germans had underestimated all but the French)

  2. ^ Essentially that. Stalin knew only too well whom kept the USSR topped up with Lorries, Tanks, Guns, Aircraft, munitions of all sorts... and even Lard... it was the British Empire & the USA. As per demands of statehood and ideology he postured aplenty, but knew that the USSR would lose a shooting war, if not on the ground then in the industrial game... and that was without the Nuclear dimension. (the US had only a handful of them ready for use, but a handful were scary enough, as was the size of the USAAF & RAF that could deliver them... and similarly nasty weapons like Mustard Gas & [weaponized] Anthrax... yup the RAF had a stockpile of that by 1944; just in case Germany used its Chlorine & Sarin stockpile)

  3. Yup, the so-called "Bevin Boys". The unlucky chaps got hammered for it by other civvies too, whom assumed they were "conchies" (contientious objectors). The reality was that the chaps had no choice, and did a great job keeping the nation in-coal.
