The U.S. doesn't go off of "innocence", it goes off of "guilty" vs "not guilty."
Many people take a plea rather than taking their case to trial, even when they're innocent. If everyone who is accused took their case to trial without copping to a plea, the U.S. judicial system would overwhelming then crumble. There aren't enough resources for that.
By pleading guilty, you can realistically serve only about 20 yrs or less on a 30-year sentence with Good Time, Time Served, participation in rehab programs, or even snitching on another criminal. If you take it to trial and lose, you're automatically looking at 40/45 years minimum to Life Without Parole.
Pleading guilty, even if you're innocent, is the safest option, ESPECIALLY if you're low income and cannot afford a quality lawyer.
