I mean, other Democrats ( like JFK ) generally preached civil rights, but were incompetent in that area and the Republican Party at the time was just beginning to become obsessed with earning support using racism and support for segregation. It was Johnson's meanness that allowed him to do so much good.

Without the drastic military spending for the Vietnam War, they could have been more easily achieved. That was one of Martin Luther King's reasons for criticizing the Vietnam War effort. Johnson also ushered in the Economic Opportunity Act and the Food Stamp Act, stuff for which government funding should exist. The war on poverty is generally accepted as a landmark achievement in the area of American public expenditure and social welfare.

There was an economic recession under Reagan in 1982 as well as a stock market crash in 1987 and poverty was terrible which was exacerbated by Reagan's overwhelming deregulation. The collapse of the Soviet Union was largely due to the division over Gorbachev's Glasnost and Perestroika reforms which enhanced freedom of speech and undermined the one-party state. They were pretty unpopular with folks like Vladimir Putin, Chief of the KGB security forces, whose power Gorbachev significantly reduced.

In both the House and Senate, 189 out of 198 northern Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and only 9 out of 112 southern Democrats voted for it. Meanwhile, 164 out of 193 northern Republicans voted for it while 0 out of 12 southern Republicans did. Of course, a larger percentage of the Republican Party voted for it, unlike the Democratic Party, but that was 'cause the majority of the Democratic Party at the time came from the south. Doesn't change the fact that more Democrats voted for it overall.

  233. Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty significantly reduced economic inequality in the US and allowed millions of Americans to overcome poverty. It ushered in Medicare and Medicaid, making it much easier for the less well off to receive health care. You may want to get rid of Medicare and Medicaid, making it virtually impossible for folks who aren't rich to have health care and disproportionately harming black Americans, but you might feel differently if you were living on the street. Just hope that one day, you'll come to care about those less fortunate than yourself and not just the very wealthy.

Many of them were rich cotton business owners who opposed abolition since they profited so much from slavery. American history is littered with examples of folks who defended the freedom of white folks to reduce the freedom of black folks in the name of business profit. Goldwater may not have worn a shirt saying, 'I am racist', but he opposed one of the most significant laws against racial discrimination.

He also worked pretty closely with Martin Luther King Jr. His battle against poverty with his social welfare programmes allowed millions of Americans to overcome poverty. If only he hadn't been so committed to an unwinnable war, he might have achieved universal health care for the United States and he'd be remembered even more fondly as US President. It's true that he would have had the most to gain from the death of JFK, but the far-right Cold War fanatics within the CIA who could have done it without him and kept it from him. They kept a President in the dark before with the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Lyndon Johnson ended segregation and he was a Democrat. Meanwhile, Republicans of the time like Nixon and Goldwater tried to increase support among white southern voters by appealing to racism and support for segregation, and ultimately succeeded in doing so. That's largely why the Democratic Party lost support from the south and white supremacist groups to the Republican Party.
