  1. Re: population. One article I read a couple months ago mentioned that while in the USSR the soldiers/boys came from 3-4 children in a family on average, now they come from 1-2 children, i.e. parents having only one or two children. They are less likely to send their boys to die otherwise they will have nobody to look after them as they age. Russia is dying out, even with the immigration. Poverty and neglect by the govt is the main culprit. There you have a widespread alcoholism, other drugs abuse, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, or even rabies. Russia is a developing country according to all this.

  2. Comparing UA and Afghanistan has other factors. UA is more densely populated so greater damages. It is also a more open country whereas Afghanistan has a difficult terrain to conquer. So even if with less resources and their equipment being more primitive in the 80s in comparison to USSR, chasing the mujahideens in mountains, or even hiding in tunnels not clearly visible on the first sight isn't the same as flat shelling UA forces on exposed fields or forests.
