Without knowing much details, I got an impression that this zero covid policy is just a test how far with a control the regime can get and what will follow. They certainly cannot be that stupid to miss the fact that you cannot really contain Omicron and its offspring to the zero level. You would need to stop living things crossing the border, that means people and animals, because animals were also reported catching covid, at least its earlier strains. It would be impossible to keep China covid free for long, even if they succeeded eliminating it for one point in time.
