Never heard the word parasocial relationship, but I can see what is happening to people. I was also a teenager, but never been to a top celebrity concert. At the most I was buying magazines with their photos, watching music videos or films (singers vs actors), I had my favourites and their posters or cut out pictures around me. When I was learning English I was a sort of fantacising about visiting America and meeting my most fav person there, and chatting with them. I lost no money due to my admiration to any of them (if I don't count those mags and a couple posters I bought) but I learned English better than my class mates. :) Now hardly anyone can tell English is not my first language, neither the second :D I never understood girls getting hysterical when their idol on the stage looked at them, many crying their eyes out, some were literally fainting... Like how can one deliver a personal relationship to dozens thousands people in the audience? Or millions over the internet? Of course those celebrities love the audience. They are cashing from it. Who wouldn't love an army of such fools?

Just today I watched a short documentary on how pyramid schemes bankrupted Albania in 1990s. That happened to people who emerged from 40 years of dictatorial regime, isolated from the outside world, poor and desperate and sharks came to fish for the last they had. And they lost it. There was a civil war as a result. This is similar. Ignorant people with hungry eyes putting their life savings into risky schemes, completely ignoring common sense that this is too good to be true. Giving money into unregulated schemes... what could go wrong? Everything, for some. Fly high, fall low. In my mind the word influencer starts very closely resembling the meaning of a word prostitute.
