You can save yourself a lot of struggle by taking a proper guided course via distant learning where it was all planned for you by professionals with guidance and also tutorials where you can ask questions and get specific answers. I did that and I didn't have any issues. I scored distinction in a science subject on the second level with a proper exam in English as my third language. Then I progressed to the full time university course in a related subject. Distant learning was me rather testing whether I was up to it and partly to satisfy my hunger for knowledge. It was a good investment of money and time/effort.
