  2. I think the main issue is that you can’t assume the third party will send in the big boys. Maybe it says it cares, and maybe it really does, but things happen over time. Politicians lose support (or they might not even have enough to send troops in initially), the national mood changes, or maybe there’s another conflict somewhere else that gets higher priority. Ultimately, talk is cheap; that’s why the signal has to be costly.

  3. Thanks for another amazing lecture! Maybe I’m still being pessimistic, but I feel like a third power stepping in doesn’t ultimately resolve the conflict, even if it saves lives and is overall a good thing. Both sides still have grievances. What “state” exists after might be just a puppet, or at least, less legitimate since it’s being held together by a foreign power. I think of a person on life support. Machines and medical care can keep him or her alive for awhile, but aside from the small minority of patients who have no underlying conditions, they can’t make them healthy again.
