The risk of criminals gaining privacy is worth it if it provides good people with better privacy.

It’s an attack on free speech. They literally banned software, not bad actors themselves.

@nadirqg What it had logs but nobody knew it had logs?

As usual the financially privileged can’t imagine what they have something others don’t. 💀 I think you missed the point here, the people using the protocol are not anyone’s clientele. It would be like banning air because criminals use air.

@toomanyaccounts Why “supposedly”?
2
@toomanyaccounts You don’t need the legal system to prove what is being recorded on the Ethereum blockchain. Furthermore, just because there is a record of it doesn’t mean the person will get charged, so I fail to see how charges have any bearing on what is recorded on chain? The whole point is you can verify the data yourself instead of relying on other parties (including the legal system). Don’t trust. Verify.

There aren’t really any non-physical highly liquid options to do that

Companies sell your information all the time, genius, look up “credit reporting agencies”. Perfect is the enemy of good.

I think that’s the point because they can throw anyone in jail by just sending them 0.1 ETH.

How did crypto create the solution? Are you saying tornado cash is just a copy cat of some other protocol?
1
@distazo9174 Well, your assessment isn’t accurate broadly speaking, there’s plenty of ways to maintain privacy on systems that utilize a blockchain without acting in bad faith. Whether the user decides to use privacy tools that aren’t a default option is their decision.
1
@distazo9174 Which blockchain are you referring to specifically? It seemed like you were talking about blockchain projects in general.
1
@distazo9174 Uhh so Monero inherently has no privacy?
1
@CThyran If someone is a politician they should lose financial privacy so we don’t have all this non-sense insider trading. Private citizens should have privacy though.

@francoiscoupal7057 No, it’s entirely different. Laws have an effect on many criminals in the end. But code is speech so unless we’re getting rid of freedom of speech, trying to restrict what speech is allowed, is a hopeless task. We need to remove freedom of speech or shutdown the internet first otherwise it’s not going to have effect on bad actors and will only harm good people who end up in jail because their crazy ex-girlfriend sent them 0.1 ETH from Tornado cash.

48% of Ethereum is run on Amazon AWS so I’d say if someone had a motivate they could shut down Ethereum, at least temporarily.
1
@gdaw8326 Nice rebuttal. You got some meds to take?
1
But the transportation costs are high and it constantly gets debased.
1
No, a lack of financial privacy is a side effect of these open source distributed systems. Tornado cash is an attempt to get around this side effect.
