@armincal9834 Actually I would say pointers are essential and you should tell those people that if they are unable to learn them then they should probably find some other discipline because they are definitely not cut out for CS. Yes 90% or greater. One of my required undergrad classes was one called "Data Structures". In the section dealing with linked lists we were told that we could write our programs in any language that we wanted but were not allowed to use pointers. In C these assignments would have been so simple. But, we were told to use subscripts instead of pointers. I and pretty much everyone else used C. Except for my last program that I wrote in assembler. He was not too happy about that but I told him. Hey these were his rules. We debated a little while whether assembler was a language or not. Of course I told him it was. He stated that assembler is more of a systems programming tool and machine language for writing operating systems. I pointed out that C was used to write Unix so it should be in the same category. That shut down his argument and he accepted my assignment. Booya‼ 💥✔

@AureliusR Nope. I just checked and it's still GNU/Linux. The kernel is based on GNU libraries. Like I said just ask Linus or have a look at the Usenet archives. @carlblaskowitz7817 Carl Sagan spoke the way he did because of the speech therapy and linguistics classes he took in his adult life. He started doing public lectures and having been raised in NYC he wanted to shed his thick NY accent. I doubt that he would have been suing anyone for sounding like him and I don’t really think the speaker sounds like him anyway. Or maybe he took the same speaking classes that Sagan did. As for his litigious nature I always thought the whole BHA thig was funny but kind of sad. Your name being used as a code name for a product is kind of an honor. Sagan did a great deal during his career to move forward cosmology and planetary science. He was also lead project planner on the Pioneer and Voyager projects and was principle in designing the gold platter message that was attached to each probe. Aside from being a nuclear disarmament activist he was also the first to move forward the global warming / climate change theory and whether anyone agree with it or not, I am more apt to listen to a person that studies planetary science than a bloviating politician. I would surmise that professor Sagan did more to move humanity and science forward than the manufactures of a few gadgets. It is not the sum of its parts that matter.

@francoisbasquin6974 Nope. WinDOS is alive and well and so is AIX. They both get upgrades on a regular basis. The reason Linux kernel has done so well is due to the fact that it is all based on GNU and is completely free with tens of thousands of developers writing patches and updates while still having a central committee maintaining control with approval of what goes into final a release. It took the establishment a while to embrace it because most large tech companies are slow on the uptake but were finally able to figure how to monetize it without actually owning it.

@hunter0one FreeBSD was rewritten is about the stupidest thing I have read here to date. And no, unlike you I am not a fanboy anchored to any specific platform. The FreeBSD layer is locked down to the 99% of end users that own a Mac (those of us that can afford one anyway). The rest of us have the technical ability to take full advantage of the FreeBSD layer which is every bit as Un*x like as Linux and NetBSD or Solaris or SCO or Xenix or whatever. And since the Mac and Apple products in general have become more prolific over the past several years it has benefited us monetarily to learn various development environments or platforms outside of our comfort zones. After all.. Somebody has to pay to keep your social security checks coming. But I suspect that like most dinosaurs you have a problem with anything beyond what you learned back when this video was fresh off the Betamax. I suppose anything else frightens and confuses you. You are not a good representation of the present or future of computing in general and should probably go away and retire or die. So wipe the tapioca off of your chin and bear that in mind. Hey! What the fuck do you mean by "awkward 80s nerd"? They all looked like older stuck in the 60s and 70s filthy hippies to me. My dad had an awesome purple Mohawk in 1982 and got his PhD the same year. Now I'm stuck with getting one. The only problem is that I have to deal with fuckwits daily that think they are cut out for it but should probably be washing cars or sacking groceries instead. Like most of the people posting here.
