I would argue that the Civil War was about economics and slavery. The two are intertwined. Slavery was making the South rich. You can't really separate the two issues. Edit: In case you don't understand history. The Confederacy fought AGAINST the USA. You can't logically support both.

@scottbivins4758 States rights were emphasized more in the beginning of the USA. But the USA was having trouble functioning with each state conducting its own foreign policy and printing its own money etc. That's why states had to give up some of their powers so that the USA continued to exist. I personally think that The South should have been allowed to leave instead of having the Civil War. However, it is very doubtful that either the USA or The Confederate States of America would be as rich and powerful separately as they are together.

@johncollins7062 So slavery was making the South rich and was helping make the North rich as well.
2
@johncollins7062 I am talking about the South as a whole. Nowadays the USA as a whole is considered a rich country. Despite the fact that many people in the USA are not rich and we have homeless tent villages in most cities.
2
@johncollins7062 I prefer to read books than watch movies.
2
@johncollins7062 So I "avoid the truth" if I don't watch/read what you suggest? 😂

@johncollins7062 I used to feel the same way about emojis. But then I realized that they are useful for conveying emotions with text. Maybe it is time that you stop being so elitist.
2
@johncollins7062 I don't care what your origins are, you are an elitist now.
2
@zoeboy82 Who said that I don't care about origins?
2
@zoeboy82 I didn't mean his ethnic origins. I meant his class origins.
2
@zoeboy82 If you are poor, middle class or rich.

Plus, getting paid enough to sustain life is much more than not getting paid at all. The main thing poor whites had that slaves didn't was the opportunity to change bosses and jobs. This was a huge advantage. Plus I doubt poor whites were whipped very often or had their toes cut off for running away. They also didn't have to worry about lynchings as much either.

@johncollins7062 25 to 30% of white families in the South owned slaves. That is a fair amount not a small amount.
1
@johncollins7062 The economic structure of slavery was still huge because some really big slaveowners owned a lot of the wealth. Just like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and other top executives may not be a high percentage of the population but they own a lot of the wealth.
1
@johncollins7062 Turn your "white equals right" thought process around and see the bigger picture.
1
@johncollins7062 Slavery was definitely NOT worth fighting for even though slavery and economics were intertwined. Edit: I mean it was worth fighting to end slavery but not to continue slavery.
1
@johncollins7062 The Civil War was over both slavery and economics. Obviously slavery was a major issue. That is why you had a balance between slave states and free states joining The Union.
1
@johncollins7062 Yes slaves and former slaves both picked cotton. But freed slaves could choose to pick cotton for somebody else or choose to move somewhere else. That is a huge improvement.

@johncollins7062 ?

@zoeboy82 I am talking about origin as in his childhood origins not his ancestry. He said he was from Muskogee not that his ancestry was Muskogee.
1
@davidjohn438 The Confederates were AGAINST the USA.
1
The Confederacy fought AGAINST the United States of America. So...
1
GOD BLESS THE USA. Not the Confederacy. The Confederacy fought AGAINST the USA.
1
You can't logically support both sides. David.

Al Arnold is a brave man. I admire his willingness to face difficult issues. I came prepared to dislike him but instead I was impressed.
