  1. Of course there were more issues than slavery in the Civil War but slavery was a big part of the war. Slavery was a large part of the economy in the South. You can also tell how important slavery was because before the Civil War there had to be a balance of slave states and "free" states and territories admitted to the USA.

  2. Everyone is oppressed but we still have to acknowledge the bad recent abuses. And the current abuses. You can't just gravely mistreat people and pretend it didn't happen.

  8. It is hard to discuss this in the USA without saying race. Even you had to say it in altered form. You are right that it is not scientific. Too bad there isn't a better term that is well known.
