I think humility is one of the if not the most important tool for self improvement. I had low self-esteem for 25 years and I think it's judged too harshly and conversely high self esteem is held up as beneficial and empowering and a trait worth cultivating and I just disagree I think it's actually quite the liability. Humility being such a good lens for viewing the reality of Who We Are it's hard to find for some. It lives halfway between arrogance and self-loathing but it's much easier to find and embrace coming from the direction I did and I don't envy those trying to find it coming from the other direction because they've got their work cut out for them and many of them never find it

That's exactly right it doesn't matter what their intentions were if they make you aware a problem that's holding you back or incentivize you to change a problem that previously was, their unknowingly and unintentionally helping you. My father convinced me I was the dumbest guy in the room (and it didn't matter which room I was in) before he left when I was 5 and because of who he was I was so convinced I believed it for another 25 years then In a Moment of clarity realized he lied and for 25 years that belief motivated me to learn everything I could and now I'm typically one of the smartest people in the room not because I'm special or born with gifted intelligence I just worked harder because I thought I needed to catch up but for whatever reason a strong desire along with putting in the work will always give the best results. I still Harbor some resentment but knowing that he motivated me and enabled that desire had the exact opposite effect of his intentions and that's more than enough to make everything else a wash at the very least but from my perspective I lost nothing and gained a much better understanding of everything. I think the easiest way to look at it is with some humility understand it is realization or even false belief that you don't know very much and have a lot to learn that facilitates learning much more than self confidence and thinking or feeling you are knowledgeable could ever hope to. Confucius says man who knows everything can learn nothing (and I believe him)
