I think the biggest "tell" in that statement would have to be your characterization of them as well-to-do because I think what you really meant to say was wealthy or successful because well to do kind of implies honest intentions to do something good which does not apply to most in any world where we hold up cheaters and narcissists who would cut their own Mother's throat for the right amount of money as role models for everyone else to emulate and then ironically end up living in a world we hate because of it wondering why

Imagine walking through the ruins of something that has been in an advanced state of decline for hundreds of years knowing that no one you have ever known to be capable of building such magnificent things like they did in the dark ages now imagine that's your great-grandchildren and their children because that is a very real and distinct possibility in the future and we should do everything we can to prevent it from happening again
