@StKissa Though depression seem to go hand on hand with the obesity epidemic. And there seem to be a correlation with depressive disorder and a consumption that is high in processed carbs. I recall one article pointing out fried potatoes (french fries), so the problem can be partly the high processed vegetable oils that are difficult for us to metabolise.

@nattie911 Yeah, if you punch in excessive calories you will have a high chance of becoming obese. That notion of people wrecking their metabolism by calorie restriction is something of an exaggeration and delusion. What may have some impact is likely different gut bacteria. People seem to have different bloodsugar spikes to the same type of food. But extreme diets doesn't really do much of a change in the metabolic rate. What happens is that when going off the diet they often don't make sufficient lifestyle change. Reasonably people would have yo-yoed for several hundred of years. They feasted on their main foods in midwinter to consume it before it became rancid and inedible, then they started to eat more grain while physical activities were less during the darker and cold winter period. I think the statistic in USA today have a higher rate of obesity related deaths that are way higher than alcoholism and narcotics together. But yes, I have seen that suggestion by some dieticians even, that attempts of restriction could be causing dangerous trauma somehow (and some are subsided by fast food companies).
