While we also have some places where people can vote beforehand, typically at healthcare centrala in rural areas I would think the postal vote is necessary for various reasons: people who live abroad, people in rural areas and then old and those who have disabilities where they can't gamble on having to go to in-person vote and risk be queuing for a long time even if it typically take place in a place that is accessible.
