I'm currently on Douglas Rushkoff's "Team human" while I may not reckon all he sure has a point in some things about the technology that we hoped would connect us in many way may have isolated us. As living in Sweden and now and then devoting myself to "true crime" I can see that many seem to believe crime rates have increased while the opposite may be the fact. There was a discussion about it at one of the most known general discussion boards (in Sweden). Some decades ago, before internet was widespread, it was only the eveningpapers writing any details about crimes. The average murder (with average I refer to the circumstance that the victim and perp have some kind of relation) or manslaughter in context of a drunken brawl got a few lines in a corner. People seldom got a wide range of newspaper, maybe a morning paper through subscription and then they perhaps bought an eveningpaper, so two mostly for Mr and Mrs Smith I figure. But now they can surf through many news sites and get headlines (which occasionally may concern the same case). Or how people react in comment sections. If something has happened to a 9-10 year old going about for themselves a short distance people are very judgemental to the parents for allowing the kid a thing that's normal in their development. I recall a woman in USA being arrested for having allowed her 10 year old going by himself to school, and it was not a long distance. And a lot of people were expressing that it is right. The most common cause of death to a child in USA is accidents, mostly traffic and if he/she is walking or cycling on the sidewalk he/she is not necessary out among vehicles which he/she would be if the mother drove to school. So people seem to be more afraid, and maybe without real good cause because of what they engage in trough internet?
