  1. As always, thank you for the lesson. My mother said she was blonde until her late teens. Then her hair turned light brown. Her hair remained brown well into her 80's. Then went to silver. I was born with light brown hair. I am 74 and for the most part my hair is still light brown. My sister and three brother's had dark brown hair like my father. Their hair turned solid gray by the time they were forty five. I am always accused of dyeing my hair but I put it down to good genes and living life in the fast lane. My mother had blue eyes. My father had green eyes. My sister, my brothers and me all have green eyes. The love of my life has brown hair and green eyes.

  5. I might add another nasty genetic disease that has its history in Northern Europe and the British Isles. It is Cystic Fibrosis. Studies indicate as far back as 3000 years people carried the gene. One thought is they may have been exposed to heavy metals for long periods of time. I am not a doctor, but I am familliar with the disease as my son has it. Both parents have to carry the gene. Both of our ancestry is Scottish, English with a little Irish and Dutch. There were no test when we were married. The good news is treatment and drugs have come a long way. My son wasn't thought to live past eighteen. He is healthy and will be 42 in November. He is married with two children. Ani't Medical Research Grand. By the way, we live in South Carolina in the USA.

  14. Hello Steven. Thank you for the lesson. While I do have Scottish ethnicity, my paternal name Cathcart, may have it's roots in Breton. In 1178 a Rainald de kethcert, changed over time to Cathcart, witnessed charter along with Walter Fitz-Allan giving land to the Abbey in Paisley. Our branch of the Cathcart tree moved to Clogmills in county Antrim in the 1700's. My great great grand father followed his two older brothers here to South Carolina in the US in1813. My brother had DNA test done when they first started. The result was 100% Northwestern European. Now what does this have to with Viking origin ? I have Dupuytren's Contracture in each hand. My brother's do. My father did as did his father. Knowing your family's history can be very beneficial. Best Wishes

  18. Again, thank you for the lesson. My thoughts on eye color derive from the steppe migration. There are blue eyed people in Georgia and the greater Caucasus area. Also in Afghanistan and the Ural mountains of Siberia. The early migrations that formed the Corded Ware people and the Bell Beaker people are probably the source of lighter eye color. From what I have read, green eye coloring is even less prevalent than blue. THERE AIN'T NOTHING IN THE WORLD AS PRETTY AS A GREEN EYED GIRL. THE END.

  25. Steven, thank you for the lesson. After an unwanted absence, I am back at um, and all caught up. I am an American by birth. A South Carolinian by choice and a Charlestonian by the Grace of God. The comments do give me a chuckle. One hundred and six-ty three years ago we started a war for our independence and that didn't end well. My Great Grand Father and his brother both fought under the bonny blue flag of South Carolina, alas. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention their grandparents left Glascow then Cloghmills on the way to South Carolina. My fine Irish friends could show me an act of great kindness by repatriating all of the want-to-be Irish Yankees which have sallied our soil for the past forty years. A single malt scotch or a shot of Bushmills, I like them both. Yaa Hoo !

Western hunter gatherers, in my humble option, seem to have filtered into western and northern Europe in small groups coming from southern Siberia, the western Pontic Stepp and the Black Sea area as the climate allowed. There were probably people moving back and forth for trade and encouraging others to follow. These different groups mixed over thousands of years developing lighter skin and eyes. These changes occurred long before the much larger Stepp migrations. Best Wishes to you Steven.

  35. Thank you again for the lesson .My family's ancestry is Scots, both sides. For the last five generations we have made Charleston S.C. our home. My mother had blue eyes. My father, my sister ,my three brothers and I have emerald green eyes. We all have or had Brown hair and fair skin. My son has green eyes an blonde hair ( from his mother ). My son is married to a green eyed Georgian girl. My two grandboys have green eyes. They live in Tbilisi Georgia. Maybe a full swing back to the Caucasus, eh ?

There is an interesting theory put forth by an archeologist with National Geographic .That during the last ice age some of the European Clovis People traveled the ice sheet across the Atlantic Ocean to East coast of America. Clovis points have been found in the Chesapeake Bay Area and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The nearest Clovis points that have been found are in Texas. @iainmc9859
