Years ago, ABC's 20/20 pulled a silly stunt? An art appraiser can't tell you how valuable a painting is without knowing who painted it. That's literally the only thing that matters. Graffiti by Banksy - worth millions. Identical graffiti by anyone who isn't Banksy - worth nothing. Do they not understand how this works?

@darkwinter6028 - that's right, it's not about the art at all. It's all about whether speculators think the value of the object will go up or down over time. Check out the world's most expensive stamp, it's hardly a thing of beauty. It's worth $8m today for the sole reason that somebody thinks it will be worth more than that later.

The reason is that an artist doesn't actually contribute that much to the value of an artwork. They just make the coloured square, which is the easy part. The dealers and galleries have the job of pumping up the value, promoting the work and finding patrons. If you can sell your work for a high price straight out of your studio door then more power to you, but your painting isn't worth $50k until you can convince somebody to buy it, and without dealers and galleries, an established track record showing that your work is rising in value, and a network of rich patrons and plenty of wine and sweet talk to seal the deal, you probably won't.

@lucretius8050 - there are a fair few extremely rare games around, like misprints and special competition editions that were only made in extremely small quantities. But rarity of mass-produced items can still get you pretty far... just look at coins and stamps.
