@MikeHart72 Trump was pushing to give everyone a tax break. He wanted it to be permanent for the middle and lower class. To do that, though, you need 60 votes from the Senate. Every democrat in the Senate voted against the permanent tax cuts to the middle and lower class. But yet you feel these democrats are on your side.

There is an argument for that. Such as the min. wage hinders people with no job experience nor skills from getting their first job and a chance to grow. Also, the min. wage dictates how much is paid per hour, not per week. If the min. wage goes up and hours are cut, what have you gained?

The min. wage increase is an oversimplified solution by people who are not too bright that will be outdone by very intelligent business owners. You increase the min. wage and business owners, most who are very smart, will take a more complex approach to counter it such as increase in prices, cutting hours and staff, etc. It sounds simple to just increase the min. wage, but these business owners are smart and will find ways to work around it that harms the workers and consumers as opposed to them and their bottom line.

There are flaws to the min. wage. A company like Pizza Hut may have numerous locations in one area. They can do things 1. Cut hours 2. Close certain locations earlier that aren't as profitable 3. Push for automation The list goes on. When I was younger I remember the local McDonalds used to hire retire people just doing part time jobs to get out of the house to wipe tables. That does not happen anymore as the min. wage was increased. Happened in the mid 90s.

Which is why so many support state rights. Things are different in many ways in different states. I am living in my third state now, 24 years in one, 10 in another and now 2 where I am at. In my first state I lived without 1.5 hours driving distance from three other states and my 2nd state I lived 30 minutes away from another state. I saw major differences always.

When I was paid the min wage I was in high school still living my parents. As i entered college I was paid a little more and still lived with my parents. Some choose roommates to save money. Things you do. I entered grad school and was paid more so I can live on my own. After grad school I have a much higher paying job and can live better. Fact is those low skilled jobs are not met to pay a mortgage or rent on your own or develop a savings. They are for younger individuals just entering the work force or older people who are retired and looking to do busy work part time. For younger people it is a first opportunity to develop a skill and put something on a resume to move up and get paid more like I did. But if you keep raising it then those younger individuals will be priced out as it won't be profitable to hire them.

@Stormlight16 well, that is because I was fortunate enough to live in a time where crazy politicians were raising the min. wage to obscene amounts. So I was able to get a job when I was still in high school. I worked it through college and was able to put it on my resume for grad school and was easily accepted. After that, with my PhD I now have a good paying job. I feel bad for these younger individuals trying to get their first job but can't because the min. wage is too high.

@Stormlight16 and I know nothing is ideal. I was fortunate enough to have a loving and supportive family. But we don't make things worse for more people just because of feelings. A min. wage job was never meant to live off of.

@steelfallageek define a "living wage". What are your standards? Is it living on your own in a one bedroom apartment? Or living with roommates in a 3 bedroom apartment? Is it owning pets, because they cost money? Is commute time and money factored in? Are you factoring in 2nd and 3rd earners? A min. wage dictates how much is paid per hour, not per week. So if it is raised and hours are cut, what have you gained?

@@angelobalbi it is vague. Many things made in America are more expensive. Also, the MIT living wage calculator is highly flawed. What standards are you using? Living on your own in a studio or living with 2 roommates in a 3 bedroom apartment? What about commute time and cost there? There are so many factors.

lopresti4559 I agree we all have different situations, but you cannot create a one size fits all policy. Even with a higher min. wage chances are I would have obtained a job. However, considered at risk kids without supportive parents? Communities see that. A min. wage increase may benefit you, but what about all the people it harms? Have you ever considered them? I really don't think so.

@MikeHart72 "Why would an employer reduce hours ? The work needs to be done" Several reasons. Say you own a franchise of 10 restaurants in a city where 6 are open 24 hours and 4 are not. With an increase in the min. wage they could reduce the number of places open 24 hours to 3 by closing the less profitable ones early. Or just close them down all together. Won't be worth it for them. Another example was when I was younger in the 90s the min. wage went up. I remember going to my local McDonalds and seeing elderly people who were retired working there doing part time work of cleaning off tables. Interacting with customers and getting out of the home. When the min. wage went up their positions were cut. Larger companies have more staying power until the market settles. They can do with less employees if needed. These business owners are not dumb, they are very intelligent. You come up with the simple "solution" of raising the min. wage and they will counter with are more complex solution harming workers.

lopresti4559 define a "decent living wage". Should a high school kid working part time at a fast food restaurant deserve it? That is what these low skilled jobs are for. They are not jobs to make a living off of.

What about the single mother raising a kid? Is that factored in? There are so many variables here. Right now I early a little over $100,000 a year. That is livable for me in a one bedroom apartment where I live at to pay off my loans and develop a savings for an emergency. Now if I had a couple kids things would be different. If I had a couple kids with a wife that had a disability, that would be different. You see how easily that phrase "living wage" can change?

@kbanghart the min. wage was designed as negotiating powers for union workers. It was never meant to be a "living wage" but a way for unions to negotiate higher wages. Ironically, union workers kill jobs for lowered skilled workers (even though I still support private unions). Kudos for your friends for making a living off of fast food work, but how productive is that? Not to be rude but there comes a point in time people need to live up to a life they can.

lopresti4559 you bring up the kids but then ignore other points I make. What if I get married and my wife has a disability? What if an emergency hits? What about commute time? Think of people in CA. Many have to live in Vacaville but work in the bay area because Vacaville is cheaper to live in. That is a 2 hour commute time at least. Again, several variables are missing from the "living wage" calculator. What if I was born diabetic? There is no one size fits all policy. To me raising the min. wage hurts the lowest skilled people and the at risk kids. Same in how shutting down schools during covid harmed the at risk kids. Kids from higher income homes were always going to be fine. Those who were at risk were not and the data shows that. Just like raising the min. wage harms those kids as well as opposed to giving them a chance to get our of poverty.

Never said they are worthless, just that they are not worth as much as you think. When I was working a min. wage job I was cooking burgers and fries that we sold for around $8. Now I work for a company where we sell instruments valued, at least $30,000 and some over $100,000. I was on a data review with a customer for a potential $400,000 sale. Guess what? I earn way more than the min. wage because of that. It is because I have a PhD and offer a lot of value for my company and a lot of support for our customers.

lopresti4559 for years in grad school I lived off of cup of noodles and cheap hot dogs. I did not run my heat when it was in the single digits. I did not run my AC when it was over 90 degrees. I have been there. Live is not always easy, get a helmet......or in your case, a mask.

lopresti4559 most who earn the min. wage are not in poverty. Most are young and part time/temp workers who are a second or third income in a household. You know, such as a teenager working a first job. Sorry, if you are trying to make a living off of a min. wage job you are the extreme exception, not the rule.

What makes you think they are voting against their own self interest? There are many valid arguments against the min. wage. Also, if you reach a point in your life where you have to beg the government for a wage increase via the min. wage then you need to re-evaluate your life.

Under Biden's first 2 years it was over 5%. So both Obama and Biden, with Democrat controlled congresses had a higher deficit. "That deficit spending was a major contributor to recent inflation." What caused mass inflation were democrats shutting down businesses telling people not to work while giving them free money. Production was down and money was being created left and right. And again, Biden's deficit with a democrat controlled congress was higher compared to Trump. It is only going down now because a republican House, just like they did with Obama, is slowing down spending. I am sorry, facts matter. You can look up FRED stats on that.

You do know the economy is different across all states? Seattle raised their min. wage at one point to be the highest in the nation. They were able to get away with it because they are the HQ for Boeing and Starbucks. Now try that in Quincy, MO where there are like 10 people that live there. Can't compare.
