@sspbrazil "the majority of advances in medicine and advances in medicine come from public funding though and much of the public doesn’t realize that, "
That is simply not true. A lot of that funding goes into programs that basically go nowhere. When a new medical advancement happens the private sector gets more involved. The public funding you are referring to is some NIH grant going to some group in a grad school on a project that will contribute very little, if anything to the major advancement. I had an NIH grant in grad school. My work did contribute some to the medical advancement, but very very little in the big picture.
"pharmaceutical medication costs more in the U.S. than any other country in the world and in some cases 10x, if you don’t have prescription insurance you will have to pay out of pocket unless you can qualify for Medicaid which means you have to be pretty much destitute. "
Two reasons. One is because of Medicaid only willing to pay a certain amount. Another is because other nations are only going to pay a certain amount. Thus, for pharma companies, they have to make up the difference somehow, so they charge the US more. What we have to do is place high tariffs on other nations when it comes to the transportation of these medications to other nations. Force those nations to pay up as opposed to making the US pay.
"Brazil is as mixed as the U.S. in terms of ethnicities, "
Ethnicities does not equal culture. You can have two nations of the same race with completely different culture. Culture takes decades to develop as it is based on history, resources, etc. Race actually places a small role across the world.
"Also, the U.S. is one of the only countries where it’s legal to advertise pharmaceutical medications on TV and the Pharma companies put a lot o money into marketing medications in the U.S. as opposed to other countries they rely on the expertise of their doctors."
Doctors are not perfect. What you laid out is one thing that gives the US the edge in healthcare, that is choice and information. In the US, mainly due to our culture, we like to shop around. We like information. When we go to the doctor we ask questions, we just don't blindly follow their advice just like we don't blindly follow pharma companies. Take covid as a great example. Many, like me, were highly skeptical when doctors pushed on us by the government (the CDC and Fauci) were telling us one thing where other doctors who were censored said something else. Or pharma was pushing a vaccine the government was paying for. Turns out the skeptics were correct. We did our own research because, even with the push for censorship, the info was still there. Also, people can make decisions on their own life experience.
"the life pans of countries with public health systems is always higher than without because preventative medicine"
That is because of culture. The US is number on in health outcomes in advanced care. We have low life expectancies because we take more risks due to our culture. We praise a game where grown men hit each other and end up with CTE. We are number one in obesity. As for preventative care, Katherine Baicker from Harvard published a paper showing that preventative care does not improve overall health.
"If you look at the ranking of healthcare systems in around the world, the U.S. doesn’t even make the top 10. "
Those rankings are 100% arbitrary as you can weigh data in many ways. Those rankings hardly never look at outcomes in advanced care where the US is tops. Also, again, it does not look at culture. Comparing the US with the south were we have large portions in food and is obese to European nations that have smaller portions and thus lower obesity is a hard comparison to make, and really has nothing to do with healthcare.
