  4. This attitude of America to refugees is hilarious! Following the Fall of Saigon in 1975 the UK government - well known for its democratic rule in Hong Kong - told Hong Kong to take in Vietnamese Boat People (VBP). This was no doubt under pressure from the US. Hundreds of thousands were accommodated and paid for by the Hong Kong taxpayers. The UNHCR claimed that they were going to pay for the "refugees", so they made policy. In late '80s there was another wave of Vietnamese Boat People, many from North Vietnam who were criminals. Hong Kong grew tired and placed them all in Detention Centers, where families lived together. The West was outraged. The West was equally outraged when Hong Kong started pointing out that some of the VBP were not genuine refugees but economic migrants - sound familiar? There were many criminals amongst the "refugees" in the influx from 1989 onwards. Western politicians and media castigated Hong Kong, ably supported by one English language newspaper in Hong Kong, which basically became a propaganda arm of the UNHCR and other "refugee" NGOs. A costly screening process was implemented. Any who were found to be genuine refugees were resettled overseas. Any who were found not to be refugees were repatriated to Vietnam. There was also a program to basically bribe "refugees" to return to Vietnam; some of whom returned and then returned back to Hong Kong for more money. Resettlement countries, especially the US, refused to take any VBP from North Vietnam. There were riots and destruction in the Detention Centres, supported by Western countries. At the end of it all the UNHCR did a runner owing Hong Kong billions. Any Vietnamese who could not be returned to Vietnam or be resettled overseas, usually due to their inflicting crime on the population of Hong Kong, were simply left in Hong Kong. It was all very easy for the US to pontificate about the Vietnamese illegal immigrants in Hong Kong, what with the problem being thousands of miles away. So, US, karma for all the "refugees" you are having to deal with now.
