This was probably the idea behind the UK welfare system originally. But over time it expands and gets bloated and eventually when there are millions of people (even working people) dependent on it, that's a very hard drug to wean yourself off. I'm mid 40's and I've never spent a day out of work myself, but when our kids were young my wife and I drew a decent chunk of our income from various tax credits, despite both having jobs.

I agree somewhat. A generation of competent, aspirational and patriotic young people could turn this all around. But instead, our kids are being made into hyper sensitive culture warriors who think Britain is a dirty word and seem to have no ambitions other than to become "influencers". Banning Tiktok would be a good start as well.

@emmahowells8334 Never been in that situation myself, but I thought this was how we already did it in the UK. It used to be called "jobseeker's allowance", implying that you needed to be actively seeking a job to be entitled to it.
