  1. For me it comes down to the audience and the associated revenue. It doesn't matter if the women's football team wins the world cup - if they bring in 10% the revenue that the men's side of the game does then it's a basic business issue. What is even the point of these sports at the end of the day...? Answer: they are an entertainment medium and as such it is popularity that determines the advertising/ticket revenue and therefore the salaries of the players.
