Frankly, a "very large gap" between us and the EU would suit me fine.

Precisely. We could have left without a deal the day after the referendum and had our arbitrary transition period to negotiate with other nations and everyone would have known exactly where they stood. The EU have successfully dragged this out into a frustrating slog in their aim to demonstrate to any other nations who want to leave just what an attritional process it is.

Yeah and I still have little faith that Boris won't cave at the last minute and lumber us with Theresa May's deal. He has the opportunity to be remembered as a great PM for this action alone, but I fear that sounds too good to be true.
