The upcoming business model does away with the idea altogether. They will have us endlessly subscribing for the use of everything in our homes instead of periodically buying (and owning) a new one.

Excellent comment. I point these things out often myself. I expect you sub to Louis Rossman as he's been fighting this stuff for years. Apparently John Deere tractors have dozens of sensors all over them to detect if any repairs are attempted and then the machine is desabled until a "licensed" technician can attend. And it's not hard to see why.... JD these days make more profit from after sales maintenance contracts than they do from building and selling the machinery. Absolutely disgusting practice and any company that employs it is radioactive to me.

@baileyharrison1030 Even so.

I don't feel that muyself. If I see someone with the latest brand new iPhone, I think less of them actually. It's as much as I can manage to not bleat loudly at them like a sheep to make a point.

It's basically because now there's more profit in after sales maintenance contracts than there is in selling the kit.

Yeah good for you man. Worryingly there are companies who seek to make it literally impossible for you to do this. Ask yourself why iPads are glued together. Even worse... They will literally sue repair shops who fix their products. But if you take it to the Apple store, they I'll just condemn the device and tell you to buy a new one. It's great to fix your stuff, but the upcoming business model is to make it incredibly difficult to do so without causing more problems than you started with.

@6Sparx9 And these people lecture us on sustainability.... they make me sick.

Yeah that Arnie has committed some terrible crimes against cinema, as well as one or two good works.

These things make nice decorations. I have a few of these type of items in my house. Also old tools. I helped clear out a neighbour's garage who had died in his 90s and I inherited a bunch of ancient saws and chisels, which I now display on my workshop wall because I feel like a part of this guy's soul is in them. And I have a mug that isn't really all that old, it has the Guinness logo on it with the toucan bird, but it was my grandad's mug so it hangs on a hook higher up and only rarely gets used. It hasn't become obsolete, it just fulfils a different purpose for me now.

Sometimes I call it Elastoplast, which is the dominant brand over here.

Heh you reminded me... Wasn't there a massive breaking scandal a few weeks ago in the UK about schools falling to pieces? A story that lasted 2 days and then never mentioned again...? News itself it seems has planned obselescence.
