  1. It's not OK. And I'm a farmer. I long to live in a world where meat is locally, ethically and sustainably produced and consumed and in which meat is a small but valuable and prized part of our diet - rather than an every-meal disposable staple as it is now. Our ancestors had to work damn hard to get a steak for dinner once a week, that is how it should be. It's a cultural thing now people just expect fast cheap plentiful meat.The answer is not to "eat ze bugs", it's to give meat and livestock the respect they deserve.

  2. I will with great delight pay double, triple, quadruple the amount for a steak that has been reared freely on a local farm, slaughtered and butchered in my town. But strangely there seems to be a crusade across Europe at least to drive small and medium farmers off their land. I'm a staunch meat eater but I do think it should be a smaller and more highly appreciated part of our diet. Plenty of indigenous peoples have rituals in which they pay homage and respect to the animal they are about to eat... we have completely forgotten this.

  3. Exactly. Meat has become like candy, that's the problem. We should not be eating it in the quantity we do and treating it like a disposable, low value food. That is the most unethical part for me and I have lived on a farm all my life. Locally reared and butchered meat is the ideal for me, but of course I don't have much hope that the average consumer will pay double or more to make this the norm. The overwhelming amount of suffering a livestock animal will experience in its life will be during it's transportation to and slaughter in an industrial abertoir.

  7. You don't have to be religious to tjink unnecessary abortion is abhorrent. Your example, while true, represents a very tiny proportion of abortions. The vast majority are done for convenience, nothing more.

  8. We don't need to all become hunters, that is unfeasible. We just need to support a culture of locally reared and butchered meat. Which we will have to pay more for and eat less of. But we'll need less of it because it will be a much better product. The chance of this happening is almost zero.
