  2. I've heard this theory many times. You pair up each man with a woman and, by extension, a family and he has purpose that quells his natural adventurous desires. In other words it domesticates men. On the other hand if you have the polyamorous society, as Louise points out, it effectively manifests itself with the few high status men hoovering up women into harems and leaves the mass of ordinary men frustrated and jonesing for something to do. Then you need either a revolution or a war to occupy them.
