  1. I've used this phrase before. To describe someone who was born and raised here. My Sikh friend is as British as me. But he does not call himself English, nor do I call him that. There's a difference between English and British. English describes more of an ethnic thing, while British is a civic thing. Regardless the science of it, many people see this distinction

  4.  @artmallory970  But again, "Roman" was not a description of ethnicity but of civic membership. If asked about his ethnic origin, a roman would have told you he was Greek or Italian etc.
