I grew up in the 90s in a rural setting and always had a knife. I used to sharpen it on the corner of a brick wall and used it for whittling wood, cutting old bits of string off things, prying open chestnuts etc... and as you say I often fashioned bows and arrows and sticks shaped like guns using my knife as a tool. This wasn't all that long ago and I suspect many boys in the countryside still do exactly this.

@ Bamboo is good for arrows. My preferred wood for the bow was hazel as we had a row of them up the garden. Nice and springy.
