I have a Computer Science degree, graduated early 2000s. I ended up as a self employed tradesman. I had an early career about 10 years at a well known tech corporation but it was absolutely awful, I hated it. A degree just isn't the right path for some people and I was one of them. I'd have been much happier if I'd done an apprenticeship straight out of school. Edit: To those asking which trade, I became a decorator. I got very ill and spent months in hospital, which was the catalyst for me to rethink my life and leave the corporate rat race. Decorating was frankly the cheapest and fastest trade to get stuck into and start my own business.

I wholeheartedly agree. I work in London from time to time and I cannot get out of there fast enough. I grew up in Tolkein's English shires, I am literally a hobbit.

@ In my case it was just the wrong career decision. I chose that path because it was the late 90s and computers were new and cool and I was a nerd. I thought it would be awesome to turn my hobby into a job. But I was also a farm boy and no job in an office was ever going to suit me. I had to be in a job where I was out and about doing stuff with my hands and on my own schedule.

Too many joke degrees.

There is a middle option which is to bumble along, trying to keep busy, relatively content to go where life takes you. Which is more like my life.

@ The weird thing was at my tech job, I was the only CS graduate there. The guy who I shared a desk with had graduated in botany...! Their program really just needed you to have any degree. I could have majored in 16th century theatre (which I'd have found immensely interesting) and got the exact same position. I guess to them it was just proof of some level of intelligence.

@lekkai7473 I'm a decorator. It was the easiest and fastest trade to get into and I needed to get out of the corporate world asap as I was getting depressed and sick from it. Now I'm probably the most educated decorator in the UK.

Yeah ain't it just. Brum and Cov are my nearest cities and at some point a few years ago I just stopped going there. Especially Birmingham where I now feel like I'm the foreigner. Anyway nowadays there are plenty of nice out of town retail parks you can shop at and for eating out the atmosphere is much preferable in a smaller town.

Well not me personally as I have a van that I use for my non-farming job. But my dad and my brother have a thing for Nissan Nevaras.

Very much enjoying the style and vibes of the channel and the intimate "chat in the car" format. A lot about English life I can relate to.

A lot of companies just take any graduate because it is proof of some of the qualities you describe. I have mentioned this in another post but I got a computer science degree and ended up working for a tech corp. But they guy I was teamed with had a degree in botany. Thing is, it didn't matter what your firld was, you just went to the interview and if they liked you, you got the job.

@VladWorks Because I love it here and in any case my family have a farm here so I'm kind of tied to that. I leave travelling to the big folk 🙂

@ No I'm a sole trader. I have my own business but I don't employ anyone else, other than subbies for specialist work I can't manage.
