Back in the late 90s when I first used the internet, I did not expect that in a couple of decades it would have become an authoritarian digital dictatorship.

They have had far too much influence over politics.

Yes it is rather concerning that purveyors of misinformation like Youtube are able to monetise their content.

Oh man tell me about it. The skippable ads are now 6 seconds and I'm sure that time is slowed down. So you get 2 of them in a row. I just sit and refresh over and over until I don't get an unskippable 20 second ad. Because I have the data tracking options turned off, I get the most brain numbing woke, corporate adverts and I really can't stand to hear about the pointless shite they are trying to sell me. I would be absolutely willing to pay a decent monthly fee to sidestep the dysgenic adverts and the censorship. Unfortunately while YT's Premium service gets rid of adverts, the rest of the bullshit still remains.

Yes so why is anyone surprised about this? Google does a pretty good job of separating themselves from Youtube in people's minds. There's no Google branding at all on the platform after all. I'll be willing to bet a large proportion of the NPC's who soak up the bland crap that the YT algo feeds them don't even know Google owns Youtube.

Oh I had my old account shut down in 2020 for just talking about the brazen, obvious corruption and cheating being done by the Democrats, in partnership with most of big tech. I suspect it happened to a LOT of people at that time. I was even a paying Premium member but that didn't matter to them. I had been cynical about them for years, but that's the moment I basically began to hate this company.

If there was a business term for the opposite of a USP (unique selling point) then Google's would be free speech. But at the same time everyone else seems to be offering this very attractive feature. And since they have sold their sold to the devil by being in bed with corrupt government agencies, Google are in a very tight spot in this regard.

@Knowbody42 I'm intrigued as to what that is. I've been using the better known alternative that starts with a D and is a type of aquatic bird. Although there are those who think this is not much better in terms of surveillance.

But muh private platform. We collectively have allowed this by accepting free stuff and allowing Google to get a seemingly unassailable (until recently) monopoly.
