  1. NATO's Baltic Sea states are arming themselves against increasing security threats, behind which Russia in particular is seen. "We have to assume that they are part of a hybrid strategy that threatens European countries," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday at a meeting of EU heads of government with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen. It is the first NATO meeting in the new member state Finland. Several Baltic and Scandinavian heads of government warned of increasing dangers, for example against the communication and energy infrastructure in the eastern Baltic Sea region. In recent months, cables on the bottom of the Baltic Sea had been destroyed several times. In addition, Russia is using old, uninsured tankers with a so-called shadow fleet to circumvent Western sanctions on Russian oil exports. Most recently, the tanker Eventin (pictured), which was unable to maneuver, had to be secured off the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen.
