  1. In order to have peace, Europe must prepare for war, according to EU Council President Charles Michel. Europe needs to strengthen its defence capabilities and switch to a "war economy" mode in response to the threat posed by Russia, Michel writes in an article published in European newspapers and on the Euractiv website. Europe must take responsibility for its own security. "If the EU doesn't react properly and doesn't support Ukraine enough to stop Russia, we'll be next. We must therefore be ready to defend ourselves and move into a 'war economy' mode," Michel writes. "If we want peace, we have to prepare for war."
