The Swedish authorities have released a ship seized after data cable damage in the Baltic Sea. This was announced by the Swedish public prosecutor's office. The suspicion of sabotage has not been confirmed. At the end of January, damage to a submarine communication cable between Latvia and Sweden was discovered. Shortly afterwards, the Swedish authorities seized the cargo ship Vezhen. The Bulgarian owner of the ship denied the allegations, citing the bad weather at the time of the incident. Now the responsible Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist confirmed: "It was found that a combination of weather conditions as well as inadequate equipment and seamanship contributed to the cable break." The investigations are continuing. In recent months, there have been several cases of damage to power lines and communication cables in the Baltic Sea. Officials of various Baltic Sea countries are investigating the suspicion that ships have cut the cables on the seabed - possibly intentionally - with their anchors. There is a suspicion that Russia is behind it with its shadow fleet, at least in the case of cable damage in December. This refers to tankers and other cargo ships with opaque ownership structures, which the Kremlin uses to circumvent sanctions as a result of its war of aggression against Ukraine, for example in oil transport.
