According to its own statement, Russia has not yet seen any progress by the new US administration under President Donald Trump in terms of disarmament. "We are ready to maintain smooth cooperation with any American administration," Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, told the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. "We would be ready for this within the framework of the disarmament conference," Gatilov said in an interview published on Sunday. "So far, we have not seen any positive progress in Geneva in this regard." The Geneva Conference is an international disarmament forum at which a number of important multilateral agreements on arms limitation and disarmament have been negotiated. Among them is the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Pootin saw Trump's second term in office, which began on January 20, as an opportunity for a new era in relations between the two countries. "Of course, we are closely watching the rhetoric and the first steps of the representatives of the new US administration," Gatilov said. "We expect the Americans to follow their words with deeds, especially since they have said a lot since January 20." Gatilov said talks with the US on nuclear arms control and broader security issues had not been resumed.
