  1.  @FlatlandMando  Good ideas! A sling shot and a few stones, wouldn't be too heavy. An air horn-type device might be light & easy to carry, and a good deterrent. Bear spray is dependent on wind and proximity. A knife is only useful when the cougar is way, way too close! Nonetheless, this "dude" kept his head, and followed the established procedures.

  2. Bear spray :dependent on wind direction and proximity. Knife: cougar is already too close. My choice would be a pistol: shoot to scare, shoot to kill as last resort.
